First of all, the kids finally went to their 2 year check ups about 5 months too late! They are doing really well developmentally. Natalie and Townes weigh 30 pounds and are in the normal to high percentile for their age. Caroline remains a runt at 1% in weight at 24 pounds. She always has had tiny bones and a little frame so we're not too worried. Cognitively, they are great. No speech issues. Townes is the latest on that development but it is normal for a boy. He always comes around as history has shown.
One area of concern we do have is that Caroline's heart murmur, called a VSD, has not closed yet. There is a tiny hole that can be patched with surgery if it doesn't close. We obviously do NOT want her to go through that. We have an appointment with her pediatric cardiologist in December. In checking symptoms of a VSD, low weight and failure to thrive (less than 3% weight) show up. Perhaps it contributes to her low weight so we will see. She eats and is active so we're guessing a good metabolism is at play. Vanderbilt has an excellent cardiac program and does transplants. I know we are in good hands, but we could definitely use some prayers that surgery isn't in the cards. A VSD is the most common congenital heart defect. The doctor who met with us in the NICU assured us it was not a scary situation so we remain peaceful about it.
The kids started their different classes at school on August 12th. It has been a pain especially when we are used to them running into the same class and having our routine down. They loved their teachers this past year so they are sad to not see the same faces. They are adjusting slowly. We like their new teachers. They are already learning new material and making new friends. Townes cried the most last week, but as long as he could hold on to his Lightning McQueen cars for the first few minutes, he was ok. Caroline has had the hardest time this week. She's had thrush twice and a slight cold. I know she hasn't felt the best so hopefully she will improve as she feels better. When I picked her up yesterday, she was all smiles. Natalie has been fine, but been toting around odd "comfort" items like dental floss and 4 mini Chick Fil A books. It changes daily. She's been singing the "ABC" song until the end and counting to 10 for me daily. Pretty impressive! Although it has been difficult, I know it's the best for them.
Nate's 34th birthday was last Tuesday. He took the day off and we had a nice trip to the zoo. The kids are oddly scared of animals again. We took them to the Williamson County fair just to see the pig and her 10 piglets and they were TERRIFIED. Like shaking terrified. I understand the big Texas longhorn, but not the chickens! Oh well, there's always next year. :)
